What to look for when buying an SSD
SSDs, or solid state drives, are a great way to speed up your laptop or PC. Unlike a hard drive an SSD doesn’t contain any moving mechanical components and it’s because of this that the SSD is able to find your data quickly, giving you rapid access to applications and files.
Other benefits of an SSD:
SSDs aren’t usually primarily used for storage. Capacities since they first appeared on the market have been increasing however SSDs command a higher price per gigabyte than a traditional hard drive. If you’re looking for somewhere to store all of your larger files then you may want to invest in an internal hard drive or external hard drive instead. However, capacity is still important when buying an SSD – as a rule you should always buy more than you think you need.
Gamers: If you use your laptop or PC primarily for playing computer games you’ll need an SSD with a higher capacity to ensure that large files can be stored.
Students: If you’re working on writing documents and browsing sites to research, a large capacity isn’t essential, but it’s still beneficial.
Professionals: If you’re accessing a number of files daily and you work with more than one program at a time then you’ll need an SSD with a higher capacity. It will speed up the time it takes to access the programs and files you need.

Form factor is the physical size of the SSD and determines what device the SSD is compatible for. You will SSDs in sizes of 1.8″, 2.5″ and 3.5″, many of which will fit into the same SATA connectors as the hard drive would have.
SSDs are usually 2.5” or 1.8” and available in heights of 7mm and 9.5mm thickness and some laptops, mainly newer models, are only compatible with 7mm SSDs so it’s important to check the size of your SSD slot before you invest.
In terms of size, SSDs normally come in a standard size of 2.5”. SSDs for a PC may require a bracket to keep secure in a standard 3.5” bay where a hard drive would normally be kept.
As technology continues to adapt, so does storage. SSDs have got smaller and now there are mSATA SSDs which plug into an mSATA socket on a motherboard and are the ideal size for smaller notebook laptops. The smallest SSD to date is M.2 which is designed for very small laptops and tablets.
All current models of hard drives, including SSDs use a SATA (Serial ATA) interface which connects the SSD to the motherboard and transmits data from the motherboard to the rest of the computer – the faster your SATA is, the quicker your computer will respond to requests. SATA I originally had a bandwidth of 150MB/s, then SATA II came along and had an improved bandwidth of 300MB/s. This is still common and available though it isn’t as fast. Most SSDs now have a SATA III interface which has a bandwidth of 600MB/s and is the fastest.
This is a type of memory technology. Multi-level cell (MLC) is more common, more complex and lower in price, however it also has lower durability. SLC on the other hand is more expensive, but uses a single cell to store one bit of data, making it faster and more reliable. The more bits of data per cell there are, the higher the capacity the cell needs to have. This is cheaper to make but means the cell will not last as long or be as efficient.
Write speeds are important to those who store a large amount of files to their computer, or often move files around. Choosing an SSD with a quicker write speed will reduce the time is takes to complete tasks, while an SSD with a quicker read speed will enable your computer to locate and access files faster.
SSDs have a very low failure rate and are a great addition to any laptop which is running slowly. However, buying an SSD from a reputable brand is always advised. KingSpec is 10 years SSD factory offers high-quality SSD products and you can trust that it is reliable.
