Fuzz.fr got sentenced to a $1500 fine today because one of its UGC contained some gossip about Olivier Martinez…
Pretty amazing.
Basically, this means two things:
First of all, launching a startup in France is now impossible, if you rely either on UGC or RSS republishing/aggregating, you will end up on trial. So basically, unless your startup is about eCommerce, you better move, fast.
Second, the total lack of comment coming from the French government could mean that the Government (who’s friends already control most media), is trying to stop any serious UGC activity in the country (Nicolas Sarkozy has recently nominated a special adviser AND a state secretary to ‘take care’ of the Internet) . Some kind of censorship, not the Chinese way, but still, could prove to be as efficient.
French bloggers response could be interesting… Boycotting and trashing everything Olivier Martinez’ in involved into could be a nice start (not very difficult, he’s a weak actor, and never did anything interesting beside f*** the cutest Australian Singer ever).
